Ahmedabad the biggest city of Gujarat was the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970. Later Gandhi Nagar was made its capital. Ahemdabad is now considered as the administrative head of Gujarat and is situated on the banks of the River Sabarmati.
Visiting Places of Ahmedabad:
Gandhi Aashram
Mahatma Gandhi founded the ashram in 1915, and it is the most attractive tourist destination. It lies on the serene bank of the Sabarmati River. Mahatma began his famous 'Dandi March' from here in 1930 to protest against the Salt Tax imposed by the British.
Akshardham
Built in the memory of Lord Swami Narayan it is situated in Gandhinagar. It is a grand memorial built of 6000 tons of pink sand stones without the use of steel. The monument consists of a 7 feet gold leafed idol of Lord Swami Narayan.
Calico Museum
This museum has remarkable collection of antique and modern textiles. It also has ancient collection which dates back to the 17th century.
Sidi Sayed Mosque
The mosque is known for its superb screens, which are praised for their startling Jhali screen, framed, in the ten semi-circular windows. The screen is well carved out of one rock and is an example of delicate carving.
Jama Masjid
It was built by Ahmad Shah in 1423; the Masjid is positioned in the center of the old city. There are 260 pillars supporting 15 domes in the mosque.
Kankaria lake
Qutub-ud-Din got this lake constructed in 1451. The lake is circular in shape and in its center lays an island garden.
Fairs and Festivals:
Makar Sankranti
This is the festival of kites which falls every year on 14th January. Since the festival marks the end of winter and return of sun therefore it is named as Uttar ayan?"'ť.
Rath Yatra
This possession is taken out in the months of June or July here the holy chariot carries the idols of Krishna, Balram and Subhadra. A massive procession takes place from the Jagannath temple in Ahmedabad chanting the sacred Vedic hymns.
Tarnetar Festival
Tarnetar, a village just 3 hours from Ahemdabad is filled with colours in the first week of Bhadrapad. The fair here is one of the most multi-colored events in Gujarat.
Shopping in Ahmedabad
Main shopping areas in Ahmedabad are Ashram Road, Law Garden, and Relief Road. The Khadi Gram Udyog Emporiums, Hastkala, Kapasi Handicrafts Emporium and Saurashtra Emporium, are good venue for cotton garments and handicrafts. Gurjari, the Gujarat State Crafts Emporium, has some of the best products from all over Gujarat.
